dogma Academy offers a full dog training apprenticeship program, designed for individuals who are serious about a career in dog training. Over a 16-month period, you receive the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and work with dogs, modify behavior, and teach your clients how to train their dogs, using the most positive, and effective training techniques. The dogma Academy offers a variety of courses on canine behavior and handling, for people wanting to gain skills to help them successfully work with dogs, in a safe and effective way. You will gain the knowledge and confidence necessary to be successful in any business catering to canines and dog services.

dogma is proud to be offering the first of its kind full dog training apprenticeship program. It is an intensive program designed for individuals who are serious about a career in dog training. This program must be completed within 16 months that includes classroom theory as well as practical experience.

Successful completion of the program offers individuals the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and work with dogs, modify behaviour, as well as how to effectively teach people how to train their dogs. Successful graduates will become a dogma Certified Behaviour Consultant (dcbc), which has quickly become the most reputable designation in Calgary.

dogma knows that an effective and successful professional dog trainer gains these skills through learning and experience. Our program is designed around this basis as we understand that you cannot gain enough experience to be a qualified trainer in just a matter of weeks or months. Our program is committed to providing you with the theory and hands-on skills to ensure you have the confidence and experience to succeed in this exciting career! This is proven through the success of our graduates.

dogma will have limited employment opportunities available for successful graduates of this program. Graduates are also recruited through many of Calgary’s large dog training schools including Sit Happens and The Calgary Humane Society. Or set up your own business and experience the immediate success from having the dcbc designation. dogma will also coach you with setting up your own training business and provides a referral page for graduates as well as an online network.

Requirements:

  •  18 years or older
  •  Own a dog
  •  Physical capability to handle dogs of different sizes and activity levels
  •  Be people and dog friendly
  •  Be a team player and have the ability to multitask
  •  Successfully complete application and sit down interview before admission into  program

You must be able to attend a full day weekend class once a month (Sunday’s) and commit to a minimum of two nights and/or a weekend day per week of classes. You will be personally mentored by our senior through the entire duration of the program, and also have the opportunity to learn from our entire group of trainers! There will be testing to ensure you have developed both knowledge and skills with dog training, handling, behaviour modification as well as group class instruction.

dogma believes that dog friendly, reward based training methods are the most efficient and effective. It is our philosophy to educate and improve the human-dog relationship based on mutual respect, and to do so with the least intrusive methods. We do not support any use of force, intimidation or physical manipulation in training, as we see these methods as unethical, inefficient and ineffective. They risk harming and deteriorating the human-dog bond. Our classes are taught with positive reinforcement and showing the dog how to be successful. We are committed to using only modern science-based methods.

  •  Minimum 148 hours of group class observation/assistance
  •  Minimum 30 hours of hands on dog daycare experience

  •  Attend a dog training class with your dog designed specifically for apprenticeship  students (an hour long, one night/week for 5 weeks)
  •  Attend Foundations and Focus & Reliability with one dog. and an additional number of classes
  •  Minimum 18 hours of co-teaching group dog classes
  •  Opportunity to observe/assist in any of dogma’s service offerings

Additional Certifications:

  • Receive the Canine Behaviour and Handling Certificate upon successful completion of your apprenticeship
  • Free enrolment in our Pet First Aid program. Successful completion certifies you in Pet First Aid.

  • Receive 30% of any other classes at dogma with your dog for the duration of the  program

  •  $2697.50 + gst deposit, $2697.50 + gst due 3 months later
  •  4 payments of $1375.00 + gst due at deposit, 2 months, 4 months and 6 months  later

This program was developed for those individuals who work with dogs (dog walkers, dog daycare workers, groomers, veterinary clinic staff, rescue group staff/volunteers, etc.) and are looking to gain a more thorough understanding of dogs’ behaviour and communication. This is an intensive program that must be completed within six months and includes classroom theory as well as practical experience.

The course covers in depth topics such as dog health, behaviour problem solving, complex behaviour and basic dog training. Successful completion of the program offers individuals the knowlede and skills required to safely manage and work with dogs.  It demonstrates that you are serious about the overall well being of the dogs in your care. Graduates will be provided a dogma Canine Behaviour and Handling Certificate that will demonstrate these skills and knowledge to their clients.

Understanding Fear & Reactivity Webinar Ideal Family Dog Webinar

A comprehensive hour long seminar that covers why some dogs suffer from fear and/or reactivity concerns. It will help you better understand your dog’s behaviour and give you a look at things from their perspective. Over an hour you will learn how to understand your dog’s communication, how to best communicate to them in a clear and appropriate manner and the foundation skills to being resolving your dog’s reactivity or to help them face their fears.

If you live with a dog with fear or reactivity concerns, this is a session that you do not want to miss! We understand how embarrassing, scary and/or frustrating it can be to live with a dog with these concerns. Life with a fearful/reactive dog is full of challenges, but can result in one of the most rewarding and special relationships you can have with your dog. Common Behaviour Problems

This session covers a variety of behaviour problems and why they may occur. Using the knowledge of learning theory and basic dog training, students will cover a variety of solutions for each one. Students will learn how to prevent and manage problem behaviours to help clients see immediate success with their dogs as they work towards solutions. Behaviour challenges discussed in this session include barking, chasing/predatory drift, chewing, children & dogs, coprophagia, counter surfing/jumping on furniture, crate training, digging, door manners, eating too fast, escaping, handling, house training, inappropriate elimination, jumping, mouthing, object stealing, pica, stereotypy/OCD, and vehicle concerns.

Dog to Dog Interactions

Students will learn how to interpret canine communication as dogs interact with one another and will learn how dogs appropriately greet each other. This session covers the different types of dog play styles such as chasing, wrestling, and polite playing. Possible conflicts during dog interactions are discussed in detail and students are taught what to do in these stressful situations.

Grooming, Pet First Aid, and Dog Health

Students learn appropriate handling techniques for restraining dogs for health checks, grooming and for socialization with people. Students learn all about health and nutrition in this session as these can greatly impact dog behaviour. Grooming is discussed and students receive hands on experience helping dogs feel comfortable while being handled and groomed.

 Instructing Group Classes

This session discusses the qualities that make a good instructor. Students learn about personality types and learning styles. This session covers in detail how to deal with difficult people and situations in a teaching environment and how to diffuse conflicts. Through discussion and interactive games, students will hone their public speaking skills. This session also discusses classroom management techniques and coaches students on how to set up a safe space to teach in.

Fear & Anxiety

This is an in depth session on fear and anxiety in dogs. Students will learn how to recognize when a dog is feeling uncomfortable, fearful, or anxious. Students will learn how to appropriately approach and interact with dogs who are showing these concerns. This session goes into great detail on how to modify behaviour and discusses canine neuropsychology. Students will also receive hands-on experience working with fearful dogs.

Reactivity & Aggression

In this detailed session on reactivity and aggression, student learn about the different types of reactivity/aggression and discuss behaviour modification plans to treat them. Students will learn how to set these dogs up for success and work them through complex challenges. Students will receive hands-on experience with reactive dogs and will learn how to appropriately interact with them and expose them to stimuli that elicits a reaction.

Private Training

This session goes into great detail on setting up one on one consultations for behaviour challenges. Students learn about the skills that will help them excel in this field. History taking and initial consultations are discussed in great detail. Students learn how to increase client compliance and discuss what to do when training does not work for an animal. Practice sessions are set up to coach the students how to effectively handle difficult clients and/or challenging dogs, sessions or situations.
