We know that a large reason the graduates of our Dog Training Apprenticeship Program experience success in their professional dog training career is because of the hands-on experience exclusive to our program. With our updated format, we now offer full weekend workshops that are available to dog trainers looking for continuing education, discerning dog parents looking to better understand their canine family members and current apprenticeship students. We also offer one full day session exclusive to current and past dogma Academy students! Full weekend and day pass options available!
Day 1: Dog Trainer Fundamentals (May 24)
Exclusive for current and past DDT/DCBC students, this is an intensive day that covers unique skills required for dog trainers. We will start the day fine-tuning our mechanical training skills and increasing our comprehension on learning theory through games and various activities. This interactive session will also focus on shaping and how this effective method is critical in a trainer’s toolbox.
We will continue the day reviewing the personal skills to help conduct group classes and private training sessions. The focus will be on the human-side of the equation while we cover consulting skills, classroom management, client compliance and ensuring the training is successful and everyone is safe and comfortable. We will wrap up discussing how to ensure you are taking care of yourself and managing the emotional toil that can come from this work. To wrap it up, we will take a field trip to a dog-friendly business/off-leash park.
Day 2: First Aid and Clicker Training (May 25)
CEU’s (CCPDT): 6 for CPDT-KA, 4 for CBCC-KA
The morning session will be a hands-on session covering handling skills. When working with or interacting with dogs, it is critical that we go beyond a basic understanding of their communication. We must be aware of our own body language and how to ensure we are keeping ourselves and the dogs safe and comfortable. During this informative session, we will cover everything you need to know to help your dog experience stress-free vet and groomer visits and live a happy and enjoyable life with their interactions in our human world.
We will also conduct a short hands-on session to review all of the first aid skills with dogs. Whether you work with or live with dogs, having a solid comprehension of what to do in an emergency is critical and should be a requirement for all. We will wrap up the day with a hands-on clicker training session with our dogs!
Day 3: Dog-Dog Interactions (May 26)
CEU’s (CCPDT): 7.5 for CPDT-KA, 4 for CBCC-KA
Most people want a dog that they can enjoy off-leash time together and provide them the opportunity to play with their canine companions. Play is important for a dog’s overall well-being, but unfortunately, it is often misinterpreted and our influence can cause conflict. This full day session will provide you with a solid comprehension of how to set up introductions, manage group play, breakup fights, keep everyone safe and other dog-dog interactions such as on-leash greetings.
We will start the day by reviewing canine communication and important body language to watch for during dog interactions. We will rotate through various groups of dogs throughout the day to observe, supervise and gain invaluable experience to ensure you will confident in managing off-leash play and ensure everyone stays safe and enjoys their play!
